How to Profit Again in 2010

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

The difficulties that big businesses have experienced over the past several months are opening doors for small business owners to achieve renewed success.  It’s important for the entrepreneur to be primed for success, and a good control of business expenses, both fixed expenses and variable expenses, is a great place to start.

Banks have increase many small business’ debt service expense by amortizing out previously revolving lines of credit.  And other expenses, such as advertising and personnel can only be cut so far without sacrificing precious leads and sales.  These challenges demand that the small business owner always be looking for new and improved ways to manage their other expenses.

Pool Resources Where You Can

Many business owners are working with non-competitive business associates in a collaborative method in order to cut expenses.  One example is that many business owners have combined resources to share office space rather than each having to foot the large fixed expense alone.

Others have created co-op marketing campaigns and shared the expense.

Strategically combining resources is a great way to immediately improve what could otherwise be costly fixed expenses, an almost instant improvement to the small business owner’s bottom line.  Another added bonus is that sales often increase due to referrals that you wouldn’t have otherwise received.

Replace Expensive Staff Overhead Where You Can

A number of small business owners have decided to forgo costly employee overhead and are instead using non-traditional staffing techniques to meet their needs.  Is it possible to outsource, or to use contract or part time labor so that you are only paying for work that actually needs to be done?  By shifting these costs from a fixed to a variable expense, you can often reduce your overhead substantially, a direct impact on your bottom line.

While sales staff is key to most successful businesses, there are some creative ways to keep this expense down as well.  Why not consider putting your customers and business associates to work referring you business by offering a referral fee each time a lead they send you becomes a sale?  By using these resources, you will only have to pay when you actually make a sale.  Not bad!

Rebid Necessary Expenses

Reality is that there will always be expenses you just can’t avoid, such as telephone, insurance, and bankcard processing.  But, as the economy becomes more competitive, so do many of these businesses, and it is important to be always on the lookout for the best deal.  Get new bids on these expenses frequently and your total expenses will decrease.  Even previously challenging expense categories, such as contract labor can now be renegotiated, because layoffs and dull economic conditions are creating a pool of more capable resources to choose from.

This year can provide amazing advantages for the small business owner who is more flexible and can make changes quickly.  Studying your expenses and adjusting where it is possible is a terrific way to further improve that success.

How To Create 20 Killer Benefit Statements in 20 Minutes in Copywriting for the Web

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Thinking up great benefit statements has always been the most challenging part of copywriting for the web. And, second to the headline, the benefits are what sell people on your product, service, idea or even political opinion.

In comparison, the other parts of copywriting that people might find challenging, such as stories, headlines, and great price offers were easy. The benefits list always drove me crazy; until I discovered the secret to creating one benefit or more per minute.

You may recall from Sales 101 that benefits are what sells your product or service, not features. Knowing the truth to that, I started to take a closer look at what benefits really are. I discovered they are really just action items in disguise, agreed? As an example, you “build” muscles or “create” more time. So, what do you think about starting out each benefit statement with a verb that takes action? Here’s the process:

1.  Alphabetize a long list of action verbs.

2.  Put the list on your desk or computer screen where you can see the entire list
.
3.  Begin with the first verb in your list that begins with the letter A and read the verb out loud and make a sentence out of it that describes one benefit of your product.

For example, the first word in my list of verbs is “Accelerate”.

Then, my descriptive sentence might be that my service helps “accelerate” the time it takes to learn to read Spanish.

4.  Write benefits until you can’t think of any more, and don’t think of quitting early! You can cut out those that don’t have as much impact later. You don’t need to stop to think if you are writing duplicate phrases down either, now is not the time. Just let your brain consider your product and freely create the benefits as they come to you.

5.  Now you organize your benefit list in order of priority from most important benefit to last.

This process has worked for me not only to create great benefits lists, but also for writing articles for my website like “35 Reasons Why a Blog is Better than a Traditional Web Site for Your Business,” or “50 Ways to Kill a Perfectly Good Seminar”.

Use my list of verbs or create your own and start creating your killer benefit statements in just 20 minutes. In most cases, a good list of 20 benefits is all you will need for your sales page.

You Can Form Business Partnerships that Work Through Cold Calling

Monday, April 12th, 2010

No business owner likes to make cold calls.  But cold calling can be very useful to your business success even if you don’t use it for direct sales.  Below are some cold calling strategies that could help grow your business:

Market Research

Most people equate cold calling with cold suppers from those bothersome telemarketers that interrupt supper every night, but in actuality, cold calling can be used in a very positive way to succeed in business by getting a lot of research done.

You can get the answer to any number of questions that might come up simply by calling local businesses that would know the answer.  You may not always get a positive response as people everywhere are busy, but more often than not you do.  And you can always make more calls or do some additional research on your own to fill in the blanks.

Strategic Alliances

It’s more important that ever to have strategic partnerships contributing to your business success.  Most people limit their exposure to these possible alliances to those people they meet at meet up groups and other networking events, and possible referrals that come through those events.

Often you have a specific business or person in mind that you’d really like to meet, but so far have not had the opportunity.  One option might be to hunt them down and ambush them, but it would be more effective (and professional) to just pick up the phone and give them a call.  It would be easy to feel them out with a few research questions, and if their responses are positive you could suggest a meeting to talk over how you could help each other out more.

Those business people willing to try new techniques for forming strategic alliances and learning as much as possible about their industry will thrive, even in today’s economy.  Cold calling can be an effective strategy to achieving these goals.

Improving of ROI of A Small Retail Business - Look to the Internet

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Many small business owners have a doubt regarding internet marketing. They feel that having an online presence is not needed since they only sell their products or services locally. This type of reasoning could not be further from the truth. Statistics show that 90% of people research a product or service online before they ever commit to use it. This statistic alone should educate a person that an online presence is needed for expanding a small business. This does not entail that a small business owner should just slap up a website and call it fine. So where should one get begin?

Let’s take for example a local shoe store.  A website that has the purpose of furthering a small business needs to be well thought out. If a business owner is going to build the website themselves it would be wise to start with the basics. This means picking out a website template that is related to the type of business one does. So if the business is selling DC skate shoes, the website should not look too “corporate”. Second, don’t overwhelm the first page with too much information. The first page should be used to introduce the business and provide a reason why a potential customer should choose them over the competition. Other pages of the website should showcase contact information, testimonials and other useful and similar information. These fundamentals should make a adequate start to a website.

Because such a large number of people research information online, having a website is definitely important to growing a small business. There is usually small amounts of competition online for small and local businesses. Being the first business to have a website presence will always give you the edge on your competition. In our shoe store example, this is no longer possible, as competition is fierce.  This is because search engines like Google give seniority to websites that have been maintained for a longer lengths of time. This is why even having a simple website is needed for every small business operator.

Stores: shop for MBT shoes

If a business owner has no experience creating websites it is possible to appoint a webmaster that understands how to build a website for growing a small business. They will optimize the site to be a top result in search engines for whatever business one is in. Many business owners have discovered that most of their customers have come from online advertising efforts. Once a business owner has a satisfying website they will want to think about other options for online advertising. This mightinclude pay per click advertising or online press exposure. The best recommendation is to hire someone that can do all of this for the business in order to give the business owner time for what ever they do best.

Make Money by Creating Your Own Products

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Wouldn’t you love to sell products you created yourself? A growing number of people agree with you on that. Whether you want to earn extra cash or become a full time entrepreneur, making and marketing your own products is the way to go for many people. Both things are entirely possible. You just have to keep the following pieces of advice in mind to get the profits rolling in fast.

Probably the biggest draw to this endeavor involves profits. If you can be successful with your product, you really can make a whole lot of money. As a matter of fact, you get to keep the profits once you have covered the cost of making your product. That just begs the question, how do you ensure your success?

Well, for starters, you have to have an idea. A lot of people already do, they simply are not sure what to do with it. The key is to consider a few things. For instance, a product which will solve a problem will almost always help you make money online - as long as enough people have that problem. Thus, you need to do what you can to find out how people would like that problem solved.

You need to have something that people will want to have and are willing to pay for. To discover if people are into your idea, run a poll or a survey. It does not matter what your idea is, a poll will provide honest opinions from all different types of people.

You might have some luck trying to improve an older product that already exists but is not really popular. You just want to be careful and make sure you are not violating any patents or copyright laws. Heck, if you can bring some renewed interest to something by making it better, go for it! .

Think about creating your own niche or category. It could be in clothing, toys, jewelry, video games, computers - anything, really. If you have an idea, however, but no market or niche for it, you can make one of your own. Think about it - someone out there had to decide that clothes for teddy bears was a good idea, right? Someone decided they needed to invite a lighter that hooked into a USB port.

Once you have decided on a product, however, you still have to find a market for it. You still have to sell it. The internet actually makes that incredibly easy these days. You do not necessarily need to go to an expensive advertising firm. If you can set up your own web site, you can be in business.

This endeavor takes a lot of patience and determination. You have to work incredibly hard. It is not just about creating your product, you have to find a target market and get it sold as well. The first step is having or finding an idea. From there, you can proceed on your plan of action.  Do you plan to make money blogging?  Are you trying to market a product that you’ve made yourself?  Whatever it is, don’t sway from your goal, and you’ll get there sooner than you think.

The Key To Getting Buyers For Your Products

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Most people would love to be able to create and sell products to make money. What could be better than fully supporting yourself by selling something you’ve  made yourself? You get to be your own boss. You get to work your own hours. You get to enjoy the fulfillment of seeing something you created come to fruition. In practice, however, it takes a lot of work to create and market your own products. You have to be extremely dedicated and determined.

Remember, just because you have something to sell does not mean people will buy it. If people do not know that your shoes, your jewelry, your computer programs are out there, how will they know if they want those things? Naturally, they won’t. When you choose to become an entrepreneur of this kind, you have to think about marketing and advertising. When you first start out, remember, you will likely not have enough money to pay an advertising company. It is all up to you.

Naturally, you have to begin with an idea. Usually, people create products for something in which they are interested. The person who decided to create the first pair of nail cutters for pets probably had a lot of them. The person who first decided that keyboards needed plastic covers likely needed one themselves. Maybe you are a new mother and think that baby bottles can be better-designed . Maybe you have figured out a way to make a computer screen clearer and cleaner for playing video games on it.

After you get an idea, the next step is to do research on it. You want to make sure that you find the ideal market for your product.  You also have to find out — even before you start the production of the product — if people want to buy it. You can do a poll and figure out exactly if people will be interested in your product and be willing to pay for it.

There are many things that you can gain from conducting a poll: for example, you’ll get a good estimate for the price of your product, how many people will consider buying it and how often people would use your product. In order for your product to be extremely successful, you have to make sure that it has some sort of niche as well as some sort of market following.

Another thing that you want to do is test your products. This will obviously require that you come up with a prototype of your product. Having focus groups is a fantastic way to ensure that your product works and to see just how popular it is going to be.  Focus groups also let you estimate just how much the product is going to cost and how much profit you are going to be receiving.

Whenever you are dealing with a product that you want to sell, you need to promote it and make sure that you advertise. Advertising is going to be the most important thing in the world; after all, people will not be buying any products that they do not know about. The internet is a great way to advertise: just set up a website and use SEO and social bookmarking techniques to ensure that people are directed to your website.

Do not forget the more conventional media outlets out there, either. Make a brochure. Run an advertisement in magazines and newspapers. Go local and national.
